They are able to provide comfort for us when it is needed or protect us when there is danger. Rin Tin Tin and Buck are both heroic dogs in this kind of manner. While both come from completely different backgrounds and different parts of the world, they are able to share similar emblematic concepts in both of their stories which were seen in Susan Orlean’s book Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend and Jack London’s book The Call of the Wild. Their representation in both books shows a transition from the wealth to the poor, and from the poor to one of the most wealthy symbolic dogs in America around World War I. Buck and Rin Tin Tin at some point face the same obstacles in their stories, meaning that they come in contact with the wild or their wild side as they reach the climax of their lives. Even though it is not for sure that Buck existed, one thing that c an be gathered from both books is the real life connection Rin Tin Tin had in America after the devastation of the First World War. Greek Civ Versus Roman Civ Essays - Cultural Anthropology

Greek Civ versus Roman Civ Today's society in which we live in has based itself on the past achievements and failures of previous civilizations which rose and fell with the hands of time. Every one of those civilizations made certain contributions to history as well as developing human intellectuality in order to enhance its chances of becoming the supreme ruler of our planet's resources. If we look back in history right now we can say that every single mishap, disaster, breakthrough, war, or even a conversation has led to the advancement of our modern day society. There are many civilizations that have made major contributions to the structure of our modern society. From Babylon's Hammurabi and his laws, to the extremely scientifical Egyptians, and the brilliant warlike Persians. Yet they all seem not as significant as the two most remembered ancient civilizations being the Greeks and the Romans. Both of these conquered large areas in order to enhance their trade routes and in the process conquering most of the known world. Ideas had been brought forward during the times of these two which are quite similarly very much incorporated into the way in which we live our everyday lives in our modern era. Since Rome was the biggest empire ever in history, lasting for the longest time, it has always been claimed to be the greatest contributor to humanities civil advancements. Rome has been credited for being the world's first free-market empire. It also was the first empire to practice diplomacy through offering countries its "Pax Romana" (protection as long as the country pays taxes to Rome). (Internet1) Rome's generals and rulers were amongst histories most successful both in its imperial time as well its republican era. Amongst Rome's biggest and most astonishing aspects was the incredibly high standard of living in which it maintained. Hot water piping, beautiful architecture and excellent highways were amongst its many wonders. Architectural wonders such as the circus Maximus are still available to be seen today. The Roman's were also great literalists, who ruled supreme in the art of rhetoric. Great poets, philosophers and political analysts such as Cicero added their weight to the importance of the Roman era. Yet all most of the above contributions have had a base before Rome and all Rome did was improve on Hellenised ideas. (Kagan) Hellenisation was the spread of Greek ideas incorporated into the daily lives of people under either the rule of the Greeks or influenced by them. Even though Greece was ruling supreme at least five hundred years before Rome had even an identity, their philosophy, military strategies, politics as well as literature is still very much incorporated into practically every advanced civilization since their time; ours very much included. The classical age of Greece was a period of unparalleled achievement. It carried forward the tradition of rational, secular speculation in natural philosophy and science, but turned its attention more to human questions in medicine and ethical and political philosophy. While the rest of the world continued to be characterized by monarchial, hierarchical, command societies, in Athens democracy was carried as far as it would go before modern times. Democracy disappeared with the end of Greek autonomy in the late fourth century B.C. When it returned in the modern world more than two millennia later, it was broader but shallower. (Internet2) It was in this democratic system that the greatest artistic, literary and philosophical achievements took place. A naturalistic form of art took place evolved that placed human beings as they might ideally look like. This approach in art was passed down to the Romans and disappeared to emerge strongly in the renaissance era. (Ozment) The conquests of Alexander and the Hellenistic civilization that came with them greatly affected the previously conquered societies and their neighbors. The Seleucid successors of Alexander ruled some parts of the Old Persian Empire for almost two centuries after his death, and Hellenistic culture continued to influence the urban upper classes for some time. (Kagan) All these developments have led to the development of the next great empire, Rome. The hoplite Phalanx, the Greeks fighting strategy was adopted and later improved by the Romans, to form the most invincible army of their time. These developments diverge sharply from the experience

Comparison of Chinese and foreign hotel industry selling and direction 1.1 Features of touristry and hotel industry cognition direction: deficiency of cognition of the hotel, a deep apprehension of foreign hotels. Let s examine China s international touristry and hotel industry and the universe of international touristry and hotel industry runing income gap.According to the World Tourism Organization statistics, in 2001, the universe s 693 million international tourer trips to the international touristry grosss to 462 billion U.S. dollars, the mean day-to-day income of international touristry is 13 billion U.S. dollars, the mean international tourer visits each gross of $ 670 provided.According to China National Tourism Administration statistics, in 2001, China s touristry foreign exchange income of 17.8 billion, presuming that all the operators on the evidences of inward nightlong tourers to supply income, that is, the gross part of other immigrants, excepting tourers, so, when China s inbound overnight travel figure of 33,166,700 riders, an norm of nightlong tourer trips provided each entry is $ 536 of income, the difference from the international norm of 134 dollars. In another illustration, Shanghai in January 2001 to October the hotel s mean room rate is: Award is $ 22.94, Three-star is $ 25.35, $ 52.17 for the four-star, five-star for the $ 106.59.The mean U.S. house monetary values over the same period the hotel is: Award is $ 46.10, Three-star was 69.5 U.S. dollars, 95 dollars for the four-star, five-star for the $ 144.44. Clearly, the Shanghai Hotel and the United States Hotel Ratess vary with the degree of at least 25 dollars. What causes it? Chiefly due to our touristry and hotel industry runing features of deficiency of cognition, impacting the quality of our direction merchandises and services of tourer hotels and income addition the value creative activity. So, what is it touristry and hotel industry runing features? They create client delectation overall experience is the experience economy.Experience economic system is characterized by value creative activity: like Disney does, to installations, equipment and environment and phase props to the response staff, service and recreational activities and public presentations for the show describes, so that clients into one, full of emotional power to convey pleasance to the client experience.Experience economic system is basically to run into the religious and emotional demands of persons an activity, its value is that when a client s emotional, physi cal, mental and religious range a certain province, in his consciousness of the good feelings generated. Therefore, hotel directors and employees non merely suites, eating houses, meeting suites and gym suppliers, but the good feelings that the contrivers and creators. At nowadays, China Hotel Group of the features of touristry and hotel industry consciousness of the bulk of concern still remains in the service sector, the general dining, meetings, nightlong solution to the job on other services. To rise to the tallness of the Experience Economy outstanding client experience to better merchandises and services of the hotel direction, the key is to foster the staff have a human face filled with the spirit of service. 1.2 Hotel direction forces choice: restrictions of the hotel by the unit, looking for foreign eating houses in the universe. The success of a celebrated hotel group is frequently transnational companies, they need a big figure of extremely qualified professional directors with international experience. In add-on, because the hotel s clients come from all over the universe, so that the forepart desk staff and the attainment of foreign linguistic communication demand is high. Therefore, the choice of hotel group direction forces should non be limited by the range of the Group, peculiarly in the choice of senior direction talent. At the same clip, we should endeavor to foster the state s hotel market of professional managers. It is notable that, if China Hotel Group to come in the universe tourer market of developed states in the universe with an international choice or preparation directors can be the cause of success or failure of a relationship to a major project.Because the developed states the income clients, civilization and demand of local clients in China are rather different.Such as Citibank, harmonizing to studies, the monthly per capita income of China s mainland is 100 dollars, 1,200 dollars for the Taiwan part of China, China 1300 Hong Kong dollars, Singapore, $ 1,500, Korea 1,700 U.S. dollars, 2400 U.S. dollars. If the developed states, China Hotel Group did non understand the operation of tourer market of endowments, it is hard entree to developed states, high-quality market. This requires set uping a new capital concept.Hotel direction needs physical capital such as edifice and computing machines, such as the purchase of natural stuffs needed in capital liquidness and rewards, but besides need societal capital, such as client resource and good direction of a state state of affairs, but more human capital, that is originative the assorted types of capital used in combination to make the largest hotel merchandises and services add value to people. 1.3 Hotel Marketing Network Construction: Our Restaurant is weak, foreign hotels to beef up. Historically, more attending to China s Hotel Group of the standardization and standardisation of internal service direction, selling forces frequently use a simple promotional methods, such as transporting out Valentine s Day, Christmas promotional activities and exhibition. The hotel group will concentrate on the usage of foreign client feeling portion A ; acirc ; †  clients A ; acirc ; †  client head portion, market portion, the client to make Torahs, woven from a strong selling web, and accumulated a big figure of loyal client base. China Hotel Marketing Management Strategies 2.1 Continue to understand client demands and make client satisfaction Customer demands are diverse, is hard to understand, because the client does non set his demands clear to the hotel, this can merely be the deficiency of ingestion of the client experience, hapless or incommodiousness statements, such as: the demand for clients to book a tour five-star hotel suites, which is the linguistic communication that he needs, and he truly needs because he can afford to pay five-star hotel room costs, select the star is a symbol of their individuality, the client frequently does non bespeak the demand for this instance is he expected to remain bound to acquire five-star hotel quality service, which can cut down the cost of his clip, energy ingestion and purchase of hazards, while clients besides want to bask the pleasant sensory, such as: a eating house with indoor tour pool to the leisure and amusement, the eventide in the saloon and apprehension of the attender confab, clients besides do non desire to hold some mute needs.Such as: Check the hotel can acquir e reward points, to ease an assignment with person and so on, so the hotel selling research should be focused on client demands continue to develop merchandises to run into client demands and services, to make characteristics with the file to seek to make better than rival seven better, so as to absorb a long clip client, in footings of hotel selling and direction to obtain client satisfaction is really of import, thought sellers continue pulling clients through a assortment of ways, but the hotel but because of the uninterrupted client service jobs caused by the loss of Deal or No Deal will be will do the hotel into recession, pulling clients because the more the faster the loss. Research has shown that: to pull a new client than to maintain old clients frequently spend 5 times the cost, to do the client non to run out, the key is client satisfaction, because a satisfied client will: ( 1 ) to see more frequently, on Hotel Loyal ; ( 2 ) willing to purchase the hotel recommended new merchandises ; ( 3 ) take the enterprise to the people around the hotel, said good things, to assist present other hotel invitees ; ( 4 ) competition in the hotel overlook the ads, non sensitive to monetary value ; ( 5 ) Like an old friend happy to give the hotel some good recommendations ; ( 6 ) compared with new clients, cut down selling costs and service costs. The client is the best instructor, the hotel sellers continue to take the enterprise to garner client feedback and suggestions, because under normal fortunes, the client will non take the enterprise to state, and clients satisfied or really frequently merely in the instance of choler merely congratulations or Hotel complaints. Therefore, selling directors through assorted channels to seek to look into and foretell client demands, entree to client feedback.Such as: clients look into out, delight make full out the client feedback signifier, you can put up an synergistic Web site to pass on with customers.Guest Relations Manager, clients stay active call ; gross revenues tracking services. Customer satisfaction is the footing for the endurance of the hotel.Marketing instance directors to client satisfaction statistics, measuring of client satisfaction rate, while the hotel to the client satisfaction rate compared with competitors.Only by keeping high client satisfaction rate, the hotel to acquire a satisfactory return in order to keep long-run development potency. 2.2 To beef up coordination, and make a good ambiance in the selling. Hotel merchandise as a whole, the client received from the cheque to the check-out is from the assorted sections of the common services, in the client service in any one sector is really of import, but frequently each specific sectors to changing grades with selfish departmentally construct, the Engineering Department in order to salvage energy, will intentionally switching clip control of air conditioning.Complaint until the invitees, the hotel know that air conditioning is unequal ; the Ministry of Finance does non command the financess withdrawn from circulation, despite the relaxation of recognition policy and so on.Therefore: ( 1 ) First of wholly, the hotel selling section and clients as a nexus, must ever and hotel sectors of communicating, coordination, information on client demands will be accurately communicated to the relevant sections. ( 2 ) the hotel from top to bottom to set up a right sense of service, depending on staff as internal clients, and make everyone for the f ollowing procedure service atmosphere. ( 3 ) the assorted subdivisions of the hotel must be of sufficient communicating, problem-solving to run into client demands to stand in the position of coordination. ( 4 ) recruiting and engaging the right staff, developing employees on client service consciousness, motivate staff with the right method of service, bold and effectual authorization, and through the progress, things in cheque after the mistake appears to command services ; ( 5 ) from the general director to the employee must hold extended contacts with clients, listening to client feedback, and pass on client demands to the relevant sections, should be fast and repute and strive to do client 100 % satisfaction. 2.3 To obtain a satisfactory rate of return Sellers non merely to make client satisfaction through a assortment of ways, but besides on the hotel s profitableness, taking into history the norm monetary values and tenancy rates, can non prosecute nonreversible, to the chase of net income maximization, at present, some eating houses do non make the selling section market research, there is no public dealingss program, non the selling budget, selling, merely to move as response section, price reduction section s maps, the hotel s price-cutting if the blind to win a individual short-run client trueness, the profitableness of the hotel merely to supply clients with better service, selling and direction should non merely see the client satisfaction, taking into history the hotel s satisfaction ( net income ) , the proprietor s satisfaction ( return ) .

Human Patterns of Consumption and the Environment Essay

Human Patterns of Consumption and the Environment - Essay Example Human Patterns of Consumption and the Environment As time went by, and environmental problems ensued, people could no longer just give a blind eye. As Emerald (2004) said â€Å"the effects of all of this are that individuals are caught in a cycle of acquisition, leading to the creation and maintenance of a false - self, and a continuance of economic policies that further depletion of our natural resources and the spread of pollution, and ultimately, an erosion of our spiritual connections with nature† (p.22). It has come to the attention of many environmentalist groups that many of the natural disasters occurring this age could have been avoided if it were not for the unrestrained nature of human patterns of consumption. Human consumption has many factors that are to be considered with regards to its effects with nature. Perhaps the most pivotal among these factors is the development of human system of economics. The human spirit is one of continuing enterprise, and this could be viewed in how human economies developed to globalization and consumerism. As the world got more connected, the culture of commercialization and consumerism spread throughout the world. Imhoff, Bounoua, Ricketts, Loucks, Harriss and Lawrence (2004) indicated that â€Å"human populations clearly are not limited to consuming the products of local photosynthesis since regional and global trade transports these products widely, such that the environmental impacts of human consumption are partly realized far from where products are actually consumed†.... There is always the demand to satisfy more wants and needs as the world is more interconnected than before. This is being done with little regard to its negative effects towards nature. Muradian (2004) observed: The very nature of environmental impacts may vary from industrialized (most of them located in temperate areas) to developing countries (many of them located in tropical and biodiversity-rich areas). For instance, while soybean may be cultivated both in Brazil and the U.S., the environmental consequences of soybean expansion are quite different in these countries. Current trade-related soybean expansion into the Brazilian Amazon (in part to cover a booming Chinese demand) may produce permanent and significant biodiversity loss, while the environmental impacts of American soybean production is mainly associated with the use of agrochemicals (p.6). As industrialization and commercialization develops and progresses to satisfy human consumption, so does the increase of human popu lation and habitation are to be expected. The unchecked expansion of urbanized zones also has negative effects towards the environment. Stein (2009) posited that â€Å"increasing home sizes as well as increases in the amount of appliances and IT products being used mean more coal-fired power plant construction and higher levels of greenhouse gas emissions while the increase in landfills and biomass burning from growing disposal of goods has increased CH4 emissions (p.47). These resulted to sudden climate changes around the world and also due the effects of global warming. Nordhaus (2007) wrote that â€Å"the discoveries about abrupt climate change have led to concerns that there may be grave or even catastrophic

English Language Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

English Language - Essay Example Time zero is now, when Osama bin Laden, the international terrorist and top leader of the terror organization al Qaeda, has been killed by an elite US Navy special action force, the Zeal. The abstract is a summary of the entire article, which can be summarized here in a few words – that Omar bin Laden accuses the United States government of violating international law in killing their father. The first sentence, including the title, is full of meaning, that assuming that we do not know the man bin Laden, we can understand that violence was used against violence, that bin Laden was a violent man and that the US government stopped him by killing him. This was followed by S2 which affirms that the man who was killed was an unarmed terrorist leader who was summarily executed by the US government. However, we can also assume that the writer of the essay, which appeared in an online periodical, The Los Angeles Times, assumes in his abstract, that indeed the reader of this article kn ows Osama bin Laden, the top al Qaeda leader, the mastermind of the bombing of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, in which thousands were killed. The time expression in the story about Omar’s accusation provides a brief explanation of the events that transpired before that fateful day of May 2, 2011. First in S2, there is the statement and reaction of the bin Laden family. Omar’s sentiments clearly showed the immediate past – that he was communicating with his father. The ‘recency’ includes his (and his family’s) doubts over the statement from President Obama that they had killed bin Laden. Although, there is less doubt over the statements of the US government (another assumption), this news story has many underlying stories and sub-stories. We can still follow Bell’s framework on the role of the abstract in this subject of news English. The abstract is the introduction, or it introduces into the main theme or point of the stor y. The main point or idea of the story is that Omar is complaining and accusing that if indeed President Obama was correct in announcing to the world that they have killed bin Laden, the US government committed an illegal act in doing so. Bell says that double abstracts are common in news English, and this was ‘committed’ in this article – there is an accusation of the illegal act and the fact that Omar’s father may already be dead. There is a second presumption that the US President could have lied in saying that the al Qaeda leader is dead. The presumption is that it could be that Obama was lying, implying that he was using psychological warfare against the members of al Qaeda. It was probably to demoralize the members of the organization, and the United States was winning against the war on terror. The abstract in Bell’s framework also tells that is also linked by time expression, which portrays a cause-and-effect, i.e. Omar bin Laden is accusing the United States after they have killed his father. But there is another presumption, which is if Obama was telling the truth. The headline according to Bell’s framework is an abstract of the abstract, which is just a last-minute insertion by an editor. The ‘real’ abstract is the first sentence by Andrew Malcolm, the author. The attention of the reader is caught by the first abstract, the title, although we are sure, Malcolm’

Soviet Dissidents Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Soviet Dissidents - Essay Example During the cold war , the dissidents by their sheer presence were able to bring out the hollowness of Soviet claims that theirs was also a form of democracy and they had the unanimous support of people behind them. Thus historically, the dissidents have played a very important part in how the Western countries have viewed Soviet Union as a country. Because of the oppressive nature in which these dissidents were handled, the democratic faade of Soviet Union crashed and the differences between East and West became hugely apparent. The dissidents managed to reveal the actual manner of political repression in Soviet Union. Those who disagreed with the government's policies were arrested and sent to labor camps. Rather than acting as a deterrent to others, such actions prompted other dissidents to publicize these arrests using western media. When the government tried to arrest more people, more information started coming out from these camps - the stories about labor camps and psychiatric hospitals where prisoners were treated inhumanly and subjected to mental and physical torture. All this information caused a huge uproar against the government both within and outside the Soviet Union. By gathering and circulating information, they were able to draw attention to the plights of Jews and other minorities, non-Russians seeking to emigrate, and many others-whose situation had been little noticed. In 1965, two young writes -- Andrei Sinyavsky and Yuli Daniel were sentenced to long labor camp sentences for publishing their works abroad. The international reaction was immediate and harsh and this seriously damaged the image of the Soviet Union. But government refused to budge and both Sinyavsky and Daniel had to serve their labor camp terms, but the Soviet Union never again imprisoned a writer for his writing. Later other dissident writers such as Alexander Solzhenitsyn were forcibly exiled while Vladimir Voinovich, Vasily Aksyonov, and Georgy Vladimov emigrated under pressure. But by then, these dissidents had been fairly successful in bring out in open the conflict in the Russian society. Their efforts also gained them some relief such as freedom of expression ( to a certain extent), allowing of mass emigration from Soviet Union. Before the 1970s, it was virtually impossible to leave the Soviet Union legally. Finally the decision was made to allow Jews to emigrate under a formula - that they were returning to their "historic homeland". And finally, they influenced the government's treatment of dissenters themselves. Earlier, one of the dissidents -- Yuri Galanskov died while serving his sentence in a Soviet labor camp. But later on, Soviet authorities kept the well-known dissidents alive. They could afford to let them die because of fear of reprisal from western countries. They also star ted reducing and avoiding the arrests of prominent dissidents and allowed them to continue their activities. Of course, they were kept under tight surveillance. Although some section of western media thinks that soviet dissidents were paid more than the due attention, but the fact remains that had these people not made their voices heard, the Soviet Union we see today having more liberal attitude would not have emerged. Let us take a look at some of the dissidents and how they helped in influencing the government attitudes. One of the main dissidents Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn was a prominent novelist and

Benefits of Indian Gaming and its role in Global Development of Tribal

Benefits of Indian Gaming and its role in Global Development of Tribal Nations Indigenous peoples throughout the world have suffered and continue to suffer ever since white people stepped foot onto their lands. In the Americas, countless incidents of genocide and blatant violations of human rights have occurred time and time again. Those indigenous to North America, known commonly as Indians or Native Americans, have faced an immense amount of racism, hatred, and oppression on the very same land that was once their own, before it was stolen by the colonists. Native Americans have faced economic hardships that are unmatched by any other race in the United States; the statistics are absolutely staggering and horrifying to know that such impoverished communities and hardships still exist in America, the land of opportunity, a country that has surpassed all others in virtually all aspects. Fortunately, within the past decade there has been a significant rise in political participation and economic growth within Indian communities, which is largely contributed to by the rise of Indian Gaming, perhaps the most controversial subject affecting Indian country today. However, Indian Gaming, through economic development, proves to be a gateway to international and national recognition and affirmation of tribal sovereignty, encouraging self-determination among Native American tribes. The three objectives of this essay are to provide summaries of Federal Indian policy and the special federal-tribal relationship that allow Indian Gaming to take place, to describe the benefits of Indian Gaming on tribal economies and politics, and to discuss how this has contributed to participation of Native Americans on an international level and the fair... ...W.
